Poland detained Spanish reporter who was thought to spy on Russia
Named after Pablo González by his lawyer, freelance reporter works for publico online media and La Sexta television channels.
"ABW agents have detained Spanish citizens from Russia ... He has been identified as an agent for Gru" Russian military intelligence agency, said the ABW Polish body.
It accused González from "doing his business for Russia while taking advantage of his journalist status".
His lawyer Gonzalo Boye, known in Spain to represent the former Catalonian leader who was exiled by Carles Puigdemont, confirmed the cost of Thursday night.
"Pablo Gonzalez was accused of violating espionage ... and was detained while in prison in Rzeszow" in Southern Poland, he tweeted.
ABW said it held Gonzalez on the night of February 27-18 in the city of South Border Przemysl where he was for several days.
"He prepares to travel to Ukraine," said the agency.
Before the ABW announcement, the media supervisor expressed concern over the journalist's situation.
Reporter without Borders (RSF) Tweet Thursday that Gonzalez was detained for more than 72 hours "without a credible explanation".
"He does not have access to his lawyer which is the rejection of his fundamental rights," RSF added.
The committee to protect journalists (CPJ) asked Poland officials on Tuesday to "immediately released" Gonzalez.
CPJ said he had also been detained by Ukrainian agents in Kyiv on February 6 and was accused of reporting from a military-controlled area in the East Donbas region without the right accreditation.
He was released at no cost a few hours later.
